Their story begins in 1878 when two young boys – James Sargent and Edward Fairclough – formed their own football club called Old Harrovians. However, it wasn’t until 1886 that the club became known as Manchester United. They joined the Football Association in 1888 and made their first appearance in the FA Cup.

Over the next few years, Manchester United progressed through the lower leagues of English football. They were promoted to English football’s top tier, Division 1, in 1892, and finished runners-up in their first season.

The following season, United was promoted to Division 2, where they finished as runners-up again, in 1947 and 1948. Manchester United spent a lot of money to buy 23-year-old Norwegian midfielder Egil Olsen from Molde FK in the summer of 1953. He subsequently became club captain, leading them to five league titles (in 1956/57, 1957/58, 1959/60, 1960/61, and 1964/65). Four FA Cup victories (in 1956, 1957, 1968, and 1969). And three European Cup victories (in 1968, 1999 and 2008). In December 1958, Manchester United became the first English club in history to sign an African player. When they signed their 15th player of African descent – George Best.
